Nature and You: Mercury Mining in Northern California

05/23/2024 07:00 PM - 08:00 PM PT

Description

Mercury mining has left a significant environmental legacy throughout California’s coast ranges, including in many areas of the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. Mercury was used in the refinement of gold and was extracted in California throughout the gold rush period and into the 20th century.

Our May Nature and You speaker is Andrew Johnston, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Architecture and Architecture History at the University of Virginia. Dr. Johnston is the author of Mercury and the Making of California – Mining, Landscape, and Race 1840 - 1890 – he will be discussing the history of mercury mining in the Coast Ranges and the impact of that mining on the environment and the peoples who were involved.

Tuleyome has worked on several mercury mine remediation projects – you can learn more about those projects here.

This lecture will be held via Zoom. Click here to join the meeting. Attendees will be let in from the waiting room at 7pm. If you have any issues joining, please contact Geoff at gbenn@tuleyome.org.
